Forty years ago, some sincere Attleboro citizens join together and founded the Friends of Capron Park Zoo, an organization dedicated to supporting, you guessed it, the Capron Park Zoo. Over the last 40 years, this organization has collected contributions promising to use that money for the improvement and support of the city’s zoo.
Now, the zoo finds itself in serious need of repair, upgrade, and extensive renovation. With the city budget looking toward a disappointing deficit, the mayor reached out to the zoo’s “Friends.” You see, it has been reported that the friends of the zoo have accumulated approximately $200,000 in their coffers from the donations they have collected over the last 40 years. So, the mayor asked for $100,000 of that money to help out.
As I understand it, when they received this request, the Friends of Capron Park Zoo snapped into action. No, they didn’t write a check. Instead they hired an attorney to try to get out of having to give over any of that money. You know, when I heard that story, I thought to myself, “I’ve had friends like that.”
