CUMBERLAND – Now that Cumberland’s new 95-gallon recycling totes are distributed, the town’s money-saving, bi-weekly recycling pickup schedule is set to take effect.
Starting today, Monday, June, 29, residents need to know which week is their recycling week before putting their new bin curbside. Many don’t appear to have gotten the message based on entire streets where carts are out that won’t get collected.
A convenient lookup tool is live so residents can easily look up their exact schedule and whether they should be putting recycling out this week, said Sarah King, community outreach coordinator for the town.
The town previously announced the rollout of new 95-gallon recycling carts for residents.
Cumberland is saving about $885,000 in its current contract by switching away from weekly pickup on recycling. That includes about $204,000 in year one, $246,000 year two, and $225,000 in year three.
Rising disposal costs are among the reasons for the change, with slow recycling causing the town to go over its disposal cap last year by about $240,000.
The transition to that schedule coincides with the start of the new fiscal year on July 1.
