SMITHFIELD – Town Councilor Michael Iannotti is urging local voters to reject Question 19 on the Nov. 3 ballot, which would amend the Town Charter to increase the amount required for council approval of capital expenditures from the current $10,000 to $30,000.
On July 19, the council voted 3-2 to place the charter amendment on the ballot, with Iannotti and Councilor Rachel Toppi voting no.
Iannotti stated that fiscal discipline will be paramount in the coming years as the council endeavors to restore the town’s savings, which have been substantially reduced over the past five years.
“It does not make sense to decrease Town Council oversight over large purchases at a time when we are trying to exercise greater control over expenses,” he said.
