CUMBERLAND – This town has announced the rollout of new 95-gallon recycling carts for residents as part of an ongoing effort to transition to a new recycling schedule.
Beginning Monday, May 18, residents will receive their new recycling cart on their regularly scheduled recycling collection day. On that day, Mega Disposal will empty your current recycling bin and deliver the new 95-gallon cart.
Residents are asked to leave their old recycling bin curbside for 24 hours after collection to allow Mega Disposal (MTG) time to return, retrieve, and properly dispose of the old container, which is significantly smaller at 65 gallons of capacity. The new ones are the same size as residents’ black trash bins.
Cumberland is saving about $885,000 in its current contract by switching away from weekly pickup on recycling. That includes about $204,000 in year one, $246,000 year two, and $225,000 in year three.
Rising disposal costs are among the reasons for the change, with slow recycling causing the town to go over its disposal cap last year by about $240,000.
The town is reminding residents that the delivery of the new carts does not mean that every-other-week recycling collection is beginning immediately. The transition to that schedule will not begin until the start of the new fiscal year on July 1.
Additional information regarding that transition, including collection schedules and program details, will be shared with residents in the coming weeks. Officials say they appreciate residents’ patience and cooperation during this transition as they “continue working to improve efficiency and sustainability within Cumberland’s recycling program.”
Questions regarding this process may be directed to the Trash and Recycling Department at Town Hall at 401-728-2400, ext. 155.
