NORTH SMITHFIELD – Police are confirming another case of rabies in town, this time involving a bat and a dog in the 700 block of Pound Hill Road.
“Thankfully, the dog was current on its rabies vaccination, and the family was able to get a booster vaccine administered within a short period of time,” said police in a statement. “The family also took all the correct precautions by not handling the bat without protection and immediately contacting their veterinarian and Animal Control.”
With the growing number of rabies cases throughout the state, North Smithfield Animal Control and the Friends of North Smithfield Animals say they want to know if town residents and neighbors would be interested in a low-cost rabies vaccination clinic for cats and dogs. The cost would be $10 per animal, and the location would be somewhere in North Smithfield.
“We understand that many families are feeling the strain financially right now, and we believe this could be a great community collaboration to help protect our pets from the deadly rabies virus,” said police. “Would you be interested in participating in a low-cost rabies clinic if one were offered in town? Please let us know in the comments or e-mail .”
