WOONSOCKET – Police arrested 24-year-old Anthony Curcio after an hours-long standoff Friday. He was eventually taken into custody without incident following talks with two negotiators.

Officers responded to the first-floor apartment on Grove Street at 9:30 a.m. to conduct a well-being check on a possible domestic violence victim, but said they were unable to reach occupants.

According to Police Chief Thomas Oates, the alleged victim had gone to the police station to report an assault by Curcio and told police that there was a no-contact order against Curcio, and that he was still at the apartment where the assault took place. She said Curcio was in possession of guns, and she had seen him with them.

Officers went back to the home around 10:40 a.m., assuming that Curcio would be armed. Oates said he claimed he wasn’t at the apartment, “when in fact he was.” They then had a brief conversation, which he broke off.

For the first hour, said Oates, there were no return calls, and police used a megaphone to call out to him. Once they eventually made contact, negotiators on site and at the police station negotiated with Curcio, finally convincing him to come out peacefully shortly after 3 p.m. They listened to his version of events, where he claimed that he hadn’t done anything that morning. They said he was taken into custody without incident.

Curcio was charged with violation of a no-contact order, domestic strangulation, domestic simple assault, and domestic disorderly conduct. Police continue to investigate the incident.
