Bear sightings are being reported in towns across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, including in Cumberland and North Attleboro.

Chuck Conklin posted a video and photo of the bear on Ursa Way off Bear Hill Road in Cumberland, and numerous residents also posted about similar experiences.

North Attleboro Animal Control officers said they are aware of the black bear sightings that have occurred in the region over the last couple of days.

“North Attleboro and surrounding towns are on the edge of the expanding bear range in Massachusetts, as the bear population continues to grow and move eastward,” they said. “Black bear mating season in Massachusetts is May through July, and males will travel long distances in search of a mate.”

Mike Beauchemin posted this photo of a bear in his parents’ yard on Mountaindale Road in Smithfield.

If you see a bear, they say:

🐻 Remain calm and watch from a distance. Do not approach the bear. Bears are nomadic and will leave the area if left alone. If the bear is in a heavily populated area, alert local authorities and the Environmental Police or MassWildlife. The majority of cases will not require a response and the bear should move along if left alone. Never feed a bear!

🐻 Remove bird feeders and other food sources from your property to avoid future visits. Secure compost piles and garbage. Feed pets indoors.

🐻 Always supervise small pets when in the yard. Leash dogs when walking.

🐻Protect live stock with secure and/or electric fencing.
