CUMBERLAND – The little-used crosswalk on Diamond Hill Road at Diamond Hill Park won’t be shifted down the road after all.
“It’s staying where it is,” said Mayor Jeff Mutter, who shared that town and Rhode Island Department of Transportation officials came to the same conclusion that this project won’t be worthwhile.
Mutter said there will be some lights installed, but that’s it. He explained that it’s unsafe to move the crosswalk closer to Ice Cream Machine due to sight distance for drivers on the curve.
“And almost no one uses the crosswalk,” he said.
The Town Council last year approved a few thousand dollars on pre-construction work and permitting to move the crosswalk. Mutter explained at that time that the crosswalk leads to nowhere. He said then that they’d explored all options, but there were no feasible alternatives found because these were the only two potential spots for the crosswalk and it had been built into the Lodge at Diamond Hill project.
