It’s the best day to be a Clipper because you’re reading the first official column of the 2026-2027 school year!
Hello Clippers, I am the new student government columnist for Cumberland High School. My name is Sydney Huard. I am a sophomore at Cumberland High School, a co-captain of our dance team, and an active member of student government. I am so excited and thankful to have this opportunity, so let’s dive into our first few weeks of the 2026-2027 school year.
This school year has started off great, all because of our fantastic new student government board. Our new board consists of Flynn Holmander as president, Alexa DiTomasso as vice president, Madeline Coyne as secretary, Aiden Muzrall as treasurer, Samantha Dressler as social media coordinator, Matthew Thibault as charity coordinator, Julia Irving as publicity coordinator, and Cassie Sergi as yearbook coordinator. Everyone in student government and the community around it are so excited to see what this board has to offer for this year.
The most important event on these leaders’ minds was Aug. 26, which was freshman orientation. This day was very important for everyone in student government because of how important it is to help the underclassmen start to get to know the school. During this day all the volunteers walked around during passing periods, in between classes, to help freshmen and new students locate their classes and get direction on where important rooms may be. Volunteers also helped introduce them to clubs, sports, and other after-school activities that they may be interested in.
After the success of freshman orientation, all of student government was delighted to see the number of students, including freshmen, who showed interest in student government and attended our first meeting. At this meeting we discussed the upcoming blood drive on Sept. 17, which will be offered to students who fall under the acceptable information and are eager to help save lives in the community. This event is extremely important to student government, as it represents the morals of student government to do all that we can to help those in the community.
Finally, there is the usual excitement surrounding the upcoming spirit week, which leads to our homecoming game and school dance located in the wellness center. The spirit week’s theme this year is seasons, with each grade being a different season of the year. Seniors are summer, juniors are winter, sophomores are fall, and freshmen are spring. The spirit week will also include a pep rally at Tucker Field on the day of the homecoming game in the last period of the school day. At this event the Clipper band, chorus, cheerleaders, and dance team will be performing. We will also showcase the captains and co-captains of each team at Cumberland High School as well as the nominees for homecoming court. This event is only welcome to students, but the homecoming game that night is welcome to all.
Overall, student government at CHS is off to a great start, and we are so excited for all of our upcoming events.
