PAWTUCKET – City Councilor Michael Araujo has announced his bid for re-election as a city councilor at-large.
“I have had the honor and privilege of serving our city in an elected capacity since 2011,” he said in a release.
Araujo first spent time on the Pawtucket School Committee, serving as deputy chairperson for 1one ear and chairperson for two years. he was elected to an at-large seat on the council in August of 2018.
“Serving the residents of Pawtucket has been truly rewarding,” he said. “Pawtucket is the only home I know, and I truly love serving my hometown.”
He said he takes pride in making difficult decisions, being fiscally responsible, and being responsive to his fellow residents, all important parts of the job.
“I am hopeful that I may have the opportunity to continue in this role, to do this important work,” he said. “That is why I am announcing that I am running for re-election in the 2026 election.”
Araujo is serving his second term as president pro tempore. He serves on the claims and pending suits subcommittee, the property subcommittee, and is the chairperson of the public works, snow removal, and the ad hoc City Hall building review committee.
“I have always approached this role with the belief that the seat you occupy is bigger than the person who occupies that seat. That perspective keeps me grounded and reminds me to set my ego aside while serving the people of Pawtucket,” he said. “I make it a priority to carefully read up on and study every issue that comes before me so that I can make the most informed decisions that reflect the best interests of our community.”
He added, “If re-elected by the voters of Pawtucket, I promise to honor their support and belief in me by continuing to serve in a collaborative, informed and respectful manner. It is my belief that this and every other elected position deserves that exact work ethic and mindset.”
Araujo works for the Rhode Island Department of Corrections, where he is a general supervisor in the Correctional Industries Division. He and his wife Marylou are lifelong residents of Pawtucket where they have raised five children.
