Attleboro firefighters respond to single-car crash involving teen

ATTLEBORO – Members of the Attleboro Fire Department extricated a seriously injured driver from a heavily damaged vehicle Monday morning following a crash into a utility pole.

At around 8:35 a.m., the Attleboro Fire Department responded to the area of West Street and Berwick Road for a report of a crash into a utility pole.

Upon arrival, crews found a vehicle that had sustained significant damage. The vehicle’s sole occupant, a 19-year-old man, was trapped inside.

Firefighters immediately began extrication efforts using multiple hydraulic cutting and rescue tools. At the same time, paramedics worked inside and around the damaged vehicle to provide advanced medical care, including IV therapy and medications, while firefighters continued cutting the vehicle away from him.

Crews worked for approximately 38 minutes to safely free the driver. Once extricated, he was transported by Attleboro Fire Department paramedics to Rhode Island Hospital with injuries that are believed to be life-threatening.

“This was a complex call that required our firefighters and paramedics to work simultaneously in a very confined and difficult environment,” District Chief Maitland said. “Our crews had to balance a difficult extrication with the need to provide immediate medical care. Everyone worked carefully and efficiently to free the patient as quickly as possible while minimizing the risk of further injury.”

Crews remained on scene until about 9:40 a.m.

The scene was then turned over to the Attleboro Police Department, which is investigating the cause of the crash.
