Cano, Diossa working on coordinated relief effort for Colombia

PAWTUCKET – In the wake of a devastating earthquake in Colombia, former Sen. Sandra Cano, who now works at the University of Rhode Island, says she and General Treasurer James Diossa are working with community leaders and the Colombian American Cultural Society to establish a coordinated relief fund.

The fund, she said, will allow them to effectively support those who need help the most. A fundraising drive is being held until 7 p.m. Friday at Navigant Credit Union, 693 Broad St. in Central Falls. Funds will be sent to Chocó, one of the areas hardest hit by the earthquake.

“It has taken me some time to find the words to express everything I am feeling as Colombia faces this tragedy,” she said. “As an immigrant, my heart lives between two countries, but today, Colombia hurts deeply. Although, thank God, my entire family is safe, I cannot separate myself from the pain of so many families who have lost everything, who are searching for their loved ones, or who are facing tremendous uncertainty in the aftermath of the earthquake.”

Cano said they are profoundly grateful to everyone who has already reached out with a desire to help and contribute in any way possible. Every act of solidarity matters, she said, and every helping hand brings hope.

“To all the families affected: we embrace you in your pain. Colombia and its people are not alone. We are a resilient people who, even in the most difficult moments, rise together with faith, courage, and love. Today, we stand with them. Today, we stand with Colombia.”
