WOONSOCKET – Friends and family are planning a beer and dynamite fundraiser to support Monique Landry, the hairdresser who was hit by a drunk driver last month and is now facing a difficult recovery.
Landry, hailed by those who know her as “Woonsocket’s best and favorite hairdresser,” owner of Hair We Are on Cass Avenue, is known for her generosity and dedication to the community, and now it’s time to return the favor, say organizers of the fundraiser planned for May 22.
Chef Jeanne Michon will provide the food, and she’s also asking for more raffle items, including baskets, gift cards, or others.
The event will run from 5 to 10 p.m. at the American Legion Post 85, and there will be a $20 donation. DJ Johnny will provide the music.
Originally from North Smithfield, Landry has been in Woonsocket for nearly 30 years. As a self-employed hairdresser, she is out of work without pay, say backers of an online fundraiser, making this situation even more challenging. Her salon, which she has poured her heart into, they said, is at risk as she navigates this unexpected hardship.
“Monique has always been there for others, using her salon as a collection site for clothing and essential items for those in need,” states the page. “She donates her limited free time to help neighbors and is the kind of person who would give the shirt off her back to support someone else. Now, Monique needs our help. The funds raised will go directly toward her personal bills and keeping her salon afloat while she recovers from her injuries.”
It adds, “any support you can offer will make a real difference for Monique. She has touched so many lives in Woonsocket, and together, we can show her the same kindness she has always shown others. Please consider donating and sharing this fundraiser to help Monique through this difficult time.”
It also features statements made by Landry after the crash about the true impact of drunk driving.
“Why am I so disoriented? Why am I having trouble breathing? Having hearing decline ( like my ears are blocked from pressure. My voice is off. Headache. Vision off a bit (sometimes more in and out with pressure). Neck and shoulders burn. Walking like I am drunk and I hadn’t had a drop of anything. I wasn’t out drinking. I was actually doing a friend a favor and was dropping off something, then right home.
Now my life is scary – no income, no car, not feeling right. Now how do I make ends meet all because someone decided to be reckless with someone else’s life. He financially is good. I’m sure his income wasn’t impacted. Mine went from making ends meet to negative. I have a loan for my car/need a new car/and no pay to pay my bills/no TDI ( I’m self employed!)
NOT FAIR AND VERY DISCOURAGED!
ANGRY HURT EMOTIONALLY A MESS!
I’m a fighter but how much can one woman handle before I just break.
If he hadn’t hit me he would have barreled through the road construction site and killed the lady who was directing the traffic. I was the first car in front of him and he never intended on stopping. He was very impaired, looking at all the proof.
I’m not a mean-spirited person, so I am sharing the vehicle that has messed my life ,but omitted his plate for his innocent family’s sake. I’m sure he may be a good man, but for God’s sake, he is ruining my life and I’m 60. I don’t have the same strength, inner fight I had at 30. I just want peace in my life.”
