CUMBERLAND – Losing House District 57 candidate Jim McLaughlin and Senate District 19 candidate Jim Metivier say they expect to run again in two years.
Metivier told The Local Insider that losing by less than 2 percent wasn’t bad for a first run at the seat. He said he’ll “likely” be back to run again in 2028.
McLaughlin also said he expects to be back in 2028, after his third official loss to Democrat Brandon Voas. Whether he runs or not, he said, he’ll still be in the community working to make things better and will stay involved He thanked everyone who supported his campaigns over the years.
Voas ended up defeating McLaughlin in the primary by his best margin to date, 839 votes, or 61.74 percent, to 520 votes, or 38.26 percent.
Incumbent Senate 19 Democrat Ryan Pearson’s margin of victory was much narrower in his win over Metivier. Pearson finished with 2,006 votes, or 51.85 percent, to Metivier’s 1,863 votes, or 48.15 percent.
Metivier maintains his seat on the Cumberland Town Council, and will finish out his term there.
Both challengers had been endorsed by the League of Rhode Island Businesses.
