Residents rally for Valerie Gonzalez

WOONSOCKET — “Make a Difference” was printed on the red apparel. On Saturday at the Court Street Bridge, 74 volunteers put those words into action by showing up for Councilor Valerie Gonzalez, said the council candidate.

The honk-and-wave had the sound and spirit of a celebration, she said in a release. “Vote for Val” songs played in different musical genres, motorists honked in response to waving signs, and laughter mixed with cheers along the bridge. Red hoodies, hats, and scarves bearing her campaign messages made the group easy to spot.

“What stood out beyond the color and music was the range of people taking part,” she said. “Children shared the afternoon with a 90-year-old supporter. Business owners and public safety personnel joined residents from diverse cultures. Some participants were affluent; others were experiencing homelessness. For those hours, they shared a place on the bridge and a commitment to supporting Gonzalez.”

That turnout carried particular meaning for her, said Gonzalez.

“Behind each sign was someone who had chosen to spend part of Saturday helping (my) campaign,” she said, expressing gratitude for that gift of time and describing the gathering as a powerful display of unity.

With the Nov. 3 election drawing near, the afternoon brought fresh encouragement to the campaign, according to Gonzalez.

“It also offered a personal reminder of the relationships behind public service: people with different stories finding a reason to stand together,” she said.
