PAWTUCKET — As Pawtucket prepares for a transition in mayoral leadership, City Councilor At-Large Yesenia Rubio is emphasizing the importance of collaboration, independent oversight, and keeping residents at the center of decisions about the city’s future.
Rubio, who is seeking re-election in the Nov. 3 election, said she believes the transition presents an opportunity to evaluate the city’s priorities, strengthen communication between local government and residents, and build on investments already underway.
“Pawtucket is entering a new chapter, and I believe there’s a real opportunity to bring different perspectives and ideas to the table,” she said in a release. “Change in leadership is an important moment for our city, but what matters most is how we work together, how we make decisions, and whether those decisions improve the lives of the people we serve.”
Since Rubio was first elected to the City Council in 2022, Pawtucket has experienced significant development, including the opening of Centreville Bank Stadium, expanded housing and mixed-use development, infrastructure investments, and progress on a new high school, said the councilor.
Rubio has participated in decisions surrounding the city’s growth while advocating for small businesses, continued investment in education, responsible budgeting, and the needs of residents.
“Development and investment are important, but we also have to ask who benefits, how our neighborhoods are affected, and what these decisions mean for taxpayers and families in the long run,” she said. “Progress should be measured not only by what we build, but by the opportunities and quality of life we create for the people who already call Pawtucket home.”
Rubio said she believes the council has a critical role in the coming transition, providing thoughtful oversight while establishing a productive working relationship with the incoming administration.
“Collaboration doesn’t mean we have to agree on everything,” she said. “It means being willing to listen, ask difficult questions, consider different perspectives, and work toward solutions. Our responsibility is to the residents of Pawtucket, and that should always come first.”
As she seeks another term, Rubio said she remains focused on fiscal responsibility, public safety, strong schools, housing, economic opportunity, senior services, and accessible local government.
“I’m proud of the work we’ve done, and I recognize there is still much more to accomplish,” she added. “I look forward to the opportunity to continue serving our residents and helping shape this next chapter for Pawtucket.”
Rubio was born and raised in Rhode Island and is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island. She is the founder and co-owner of Notes Coffee Co. A Pawtucket resident for more than 13 years, she lives with her wife, a U.S. Army veteran, and their two children.
