Glocester residents jump in to remove tree in roadway; power outages statewide

GLOCESTER – Traffic backups due to a tree falling on Route 44 could have been a lot worse if not for residents who jumped in to help, said police.

“A huge thank you to the residents who acted quickly today when a tree came down on Route 44,” said police in a post. “Several community members jumped right in to help cut and clear the tree, allowing the roadway to be reopened safely and quickly. Thank you to everyone who lent a hand and helped keep our town moving safely.”

More than 6,300 customers statewide were without power as of early afternoon, the vast majority of them in Cranston and North Kingstown, according to Rhode Island Energy’s outage map. There were about 100 in northern Rhode Island, but very few in the immediate area of Glocester.

Events across the area, particularly of the outdoor variety, have been postponed today as wind gusts up to 50 mph knock down branches and send loose items flying.
