By Tom Kane, chairperson, Cumberland Democratic Town Committee
At a time when many voters feel disconnected from politics, local Democratic town committees continue to play an important role in strengthening civic engagement and helping voters make informed decisions.
Over the past several months, the Cumberland Democratic Town Committee has welcomed an impressive lineup of candidates for statewide office to speak directly with our members. These meetings gave candidates the opportunity to share their vision for Rhode Island, discuss the issues facing our state, and answer thoughtful questions from residents and committee members alike.
We believe these conversations are valuable not only for our members but also for Democratic voters across Rhode Island as we head toward the upcoming primary season. That is why the Cumberland Democratic Town Committee recorded these candidate presentations and made them publicly available on YouTube for anyone who wishes to learn more about the individuals seeking statewide office.
Candidates for lieutenant governor who joined us included Lt. Governor Sabina Matos, Providence City Councilor Sue AnderBois, Newport City Councilor Xay Khamsyvoravong, and former State Sen. Cindy Coyne.
Candidates for Attorney General included State Representative Joe Solomon, State Representative Jason Knight, former Chair of the Cannabis Control Commission Kim Ahern, and former Chief of Policy & Senior Legal Counsel at the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office Keith Hoffmann.
We were also pleased to host General Treasurer James Diossa and Secretary of State Gregg Amore.
These forums reflect what grassroots political organizations should strive to do: create opportunities for meaningful discussion, encourage voter participation, and provide direct access to the people seeking to lead our state.
We encourage voters to take a few minutes to watch these conversations online, hear directly from the candidates themselves, and share the videos with friends and neighbors who want to stay informed before casting their ballots.
An informed electorate makes for a stronger democracy, and we are proud that the Cumberland Democratic Town Committee can help contribute to that effort.
