LINCOLN – Only Patrick Laverty and God know whether he hit a hole-in-one on the eighth hole of the Lincoln Country Club on Monday, Sept. 7, and Laverty is fine with that.
He said he was playing around midday when he texted his usual playing partner who said he was busy, so he headed out on his own for a round.
“All the usual, some good holes, some bad. I even got a birdie on the par 5 sixth hole, only my third birdie of the whole year,” Laverty, of Lincoln, told The Local Insider. “Then I got to the eighth. It’s a 140-yard shot, but down a big hill with water on the left and back, woods on the right and a sand trap in front. Earlier in the year, I was going over the green but lately I’d been coming up short. So for this one, I said to myself to give a full swing and get the ball up in the air.”
He hit his pitching wedge and saw it go up, said Laverty, but wasn’t sure if the ball had enough distance.
“I thought it might be in the trap. Then I saw it hit the green and almost instantly, the clank of hitting the flagstick and in the cup,” he said.
Laverty was alone and had no one to validate it or to celebrate with.
“I knew the club president was in a foursome on the hole behind me, so I stayed on the tee and waited. I explained to him, and his group agreed to come over and watch whether the ball was actually in the hole.”
He said he walked down, saw the ball in the hole and they took a photo from up at the tee.
Laverty works in cybersecurity as a certified social engineer penetration test professional and creator of the Layer 8 Conference in June, which helps attendees better understand and defend against social engineering attacks and other forms of cyber threats. He is active in all things Rhode Island.
