CUMBERLAND – All residents were accounted for but the building left uninhabitable after an accidental fire destroyed a home at 104 Garvin St. Monday evening. The blaze appeared to have started with someone discarding a lit cigarette.
Chief Nick Anderson said that around 8:06 p.m., Cumberland firefighters were dispatched to the reported structure fire. Engine companies responding from the Valley Falls Fire Station saw heavy smoke and reported a working fire. Crews found fire involving the exterior deck, surrounding vegetation, and extending into the left side of the home.
A second alarm was requested, bringing mutual aid resources from Central Falls, North Attleboro, North Smithfield, and Smithfield.
Crews entered through a side door and encountered heavy fire conditions on the second floor. Due to high heat throughout, crews briefly backed out until vertical ventilation work was completed. Once a hole was made and additional responders arrived, they resumed the interior attack on the blaze.
Firefighters encountered significant fire extension, high heat, and structural concerns. They brought the fire under control within about 30 minutes. One firefighter was evaluated by Cumberland EMS but not transported to the hospital, according to Anderson.

The Rhode Island State Fire Marshal’s Office, Cumberland Fire Marshal’s Office, and Cumberland Police Department conducted an investigation. The fire was determined to be accidental in nature and caused by a discarded cigarette on the exterior of the building beneath the deck, which was consistent with the homeowner’s statement.

The building was declared uninhabitable by the Cumberland building official, and Rhode Island Energy shut off power.
